How did you get interested in writing?
When I was in the 6th grade my English teacher at Kermit Junior High School held an essay writing contest every Friday, and I won many times. It was one of the few things I was socially rewarded for in junior high, and it woke up a talent and my desire to write.
What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
I read mostly non-fiction, and mostly spiritual books, memoirs, books about running, and humor
How do you get past writers block?
I try to write in my journal every day. If I am out of ideas I begin be describing my day or describing the people around me. Sometimes I’ll look at a recently-read book and use a highlighted passage as a prompt. Almost all of my creative ideas and insights have come after I started writing, seldom before I start.
Are you self- published or do you have a publisher?
Self-published.
Where do you like to write?
I do a lot of my writing in restaurants, especially fast-food restaurants where I can get free drink refills and stay for a long, long time without tying up a waiter’s table.
I write in longhand in a Moleskin grid-paper journal, and then type it into MS Word. I've learned if I try to write on the computer I cannot seperate the creative writing process from editing, and I never keep anything.
